It's the female officers group of the 501st. We adopted a phoenix as our logo and I just go the logo t-shirt (it's awesome). A couple years ago I started a Fawkes the Phoenix quilt from a pattern I bought a quilt show. I didn't quite like the fabrics in the kit, so I changed most of them out for a really fantastic fiery yellow/orange fabric and a really nice blue background (the original had black with odd white square dots on the sides). So, after a couple months of talking about the quilt on the Firebird forums, I decided to change the name to Fawxy the Firebird. I might remove the falling feather and replace it with the Firebirds logo. I still have lots of work to do, like sewing down the edges (I love satin stitching, but I think I'll use a random zigzag to make it look fiery), doing some thread painting (I have three different red/orange/yellow variegated threads I bought as a 3-pack), and add an awesome eye. I'll finish it sometime next year. Now to figure out a cool quilting pattern (as soon as I learn how to use my longarm quilting machine).

Some thoughts on the first trailer. I'm still saying WTF on that Hampster Ball Droid. The guys over at www.rebeldroids.com are in the same boat as I am. We don't consider it an astromech R2 unit, but another odd-ball droid (get it?). I really don't want to make this one, unless I bring it to a Broncos game (look at the colors). I'm still on the fence about this one. I might make a financial killing if I sell a bunch of these as bobble heads for dashboards.

The big oversized bike the female is driving is ridiculous! How can she see over that thing? It's way not safe and has no resemblance to bikes like the speederbike was. And she's wearing shorts in a desert environment on a fast bike type thingy! OUCH! That's gotta hurt! One fall and no skin on legs left!

I like the X-wings, Falcon, and Tie Fighters. Until you really see inside these ships. Bare to the core, oversized, and no magic to them at all.

The sith is going to be great, but what is that thing he's holding? You call that a lightsaber? It's directly from some King Arthur/Knights Templar B movie! A broadsword with flames? Come on! SW meets Ren Faire? Not liking it at all.

At least there's no lens flares, and I think the story will be strong. I'm just not liking the FX just yet. Still not convinced this will be spectacular, but it will be Christmas 2015 fun!

Until next time,
Speaking of DCC, I'm working really hard to get everything ready, including a visit from my brother the same weekend. I think he wanted to spend some time with me, but I'll be pretty busy during the con. I did score him one of the last Saturday only tickets (DCC has been pretty much sold out for a month now). There are still a few Friday and Sunday only tickets left and three (count 'em - 3!) weekend child passes left (they may be gone by now). Anyway, back to cleaning out the guest room.

And we’re now back to this tutorial as promised. Give me a couple weeks to finish (I
hope). I can dedicate a little more time for this
project.

We left off with the front panel of the tunic, and now we’ll
add the right side and inner panel.

First, lay out the
front panel with L on the left. Measure
the long raw edge of R.

Now cut a rectangle the same length as the measured R side
and 9-10 inches in width (or more, depending on your girth). Then whatever method you choose (I used an
old shirt pattern) draw the armhole and width of side. You’ll have to fudge with this so the front
panel folds over the inner panel properly (it will become clearer later). Label this piece RS.

Sew RS to R along the long edges. (Sorry, I forgot to take a picture of the end
result.)

We’ll now set this piece aside and go onto the inner
panel. This is basically the exact same
inner panel as the IOC uniform, but without the dosimeter pockets. The piece looks like this.

Never mind the black threads, I have used this piece in a
couple officer uniforms. Notice the
pinned area towards the top. Normally
this is where the dosimeter pockets are but I’ve pinned them shut. Tip:
make sure the short edge of this piece is the same length as the short
raw edge of RS. There are several
websites that will show you how to measure for armholes (or use and old shirt
pattern just for the armhole measurement like I did). The best way I can describe this piece is to
go to ChazTorad’s tutorial as mentioned on the first post. Remember to take out the dosimeter pockets as
the whole piece should be flat (thus my pinning the pockets close). If you have difficulty visualizing this
please pm me and I’ll try to walk you through it. This piece will be behind the front panel
(again, it will become clearer later).

We’ll now move onto the skirt sections for these two panels. Sorry to do this to you, but you’ll probably
need to take apart the front panel if you’ve sewn it together, or unpin if you
pinned it together. We’ll start with the
front panel skirt. Here are the total
pieces of front panel and front skirt.

You’ll be cutting four rectangles the same width as the
front panel pieces. The length will be
about mid-thigh. Keep checking in the
mirror for correct length as you build this section, checking with reference
pictures. You don’t want it waist high
or an evening gown. It’s kind of an
attached mini-skirt (very mini). Give
yourself at least an inch to the length for hemming (more if you want to
experiment a little).

Now, align the skirt strips with the panel strips as shown
above. If you have any quilting
experience you’ll understand the next step.
It’s basically what we quilters call strip sewing. Sew the skirt strip to L, then skirt strip to
M, skirt strip to R, and skirt strip to RS.
You now should have four long strips that look like this.

Now, sew L to M, M to R, R to RS all the way down the long
edges. Of course, once again (I think
that’s twice) in my haste I forgot to take an end result picture, but I think
you got the idea.

For the inner panel, use ChazTorad’s tutorial once
again. If you already have an officer
uniform it will be the same. I can’t
remember if his tutorial has the same small flap that extends, or if I came up
with it, but there is an extended flap about two inches (allows for hemming
and/or lining) for the waist snap.

Tip: this part of the
skirt flares out a bit but not too much.
You’ll have to fudge with this to see what works for you. I have what I think is a nicely rounded butt,
so I had to make this part fit over it (yeah, I’ll call it fat butt, it doesn’t
bother me). You might not have so much
of a flare, or maybe a little more.
Whatever you do, don’t make a square dance swing skirt out of it. The skirt should just barely lay flat on your
body with just enough flare for walking without binding. Again, keep checking yourself in the mirror
and compare to reference pictures. We
just call it a skirt for easy reference, but it’s really an extension of the panel.

I guarantee it's much easier to build than an R2 unit. This is a fun little project with an RJ series race car chassis, a full-scale shell, and lots of IC chips that I pushed into a perf board while watching the Super Bowl.

A little backstory to his name: a friend of mine called it Arthur, thinking that the PBS kid show was about a family of mice. It took me a few days to realize what he was talking about. No, it's a family of aardvarks. But I like the name Arthur, and since he's full sized, I renamed him King Arthur (KA for short). I then went to work on some cool graphics for racing stripes. I came up with Excaliber with flames coming out. I know I have some work to do with it (I just printed it on plain paper in color, cut out the image, and taped it on). I want the sword to be longer, the flames to wrap around, and have it a vinyl sticker (not taped on). For what I did in a couple hours I think it looks pretty good. He probably won't win races, but he'll sure look good trying!
Silly really, but not much I can do. Men design the strangest coding and make life a little complicated. OK, enough of my rant.

What I really want to post is that I'm excited to finally recieve the new MSR2 banners, cards, and... MAGNETS! Yes, magnets for special people (like ultra fans and members). And we changed our name to Mountain States Droid Builders (because we can, and because we have R2's, R4's, mouse droids, gonks, and one heck of a Droideka!! So, drumroll please.... our new cards (banner and magnets are the same, and I got a blue banner with reversed colors):
Check out our new website for news on where the droids will be next. You can even post up pictures of our droid, meet the droid builders, and join in discussions on our forum. Happy Days Are Here Again!!

I seemed to have skipped putting AL's schedule on the left hand side for 2013 (it's been a very busy year at work), but I promised a lot of people I would post 2014. As always, the schedule is subject to change due to work, illness, weather, called to duty on the Death Star, etc.

Galaxyfest, Feb 21-23, 2014, Antler's Inn, Colorado Springs, CO
Sun City Scifi, Mar 14-16, 2014, El Paso Convention Center, El Paso, TX
May the Fourth, May 4, 2014, Wings Over the Rockies Museum, Denver, CO
Denver Comic Con, June 13-15, 2014, Denver Convention Center, CO
Britishfest, June 28-29, 2014, Comfort Inn and Suites, Omaha, NE
(I might just bring the mouse droid for that, but I'll be doing the 007 panels and party)
Rocky Mountain Con, October 2014, Crowne Plaza DIA, Denver, CO

There will probably be other events but I don't have dates for those yet. I'll post up when a new one comes along. Due to logistics with May the Fourth events, AL will probably not be out for Free Comic Book Day (again I might bring the mouse droid for that).

Please feel free to contact me before hand to make sure AL will actually be at an event.

Until next time,
I've been collecting for about four years now and have a pretty good start. Here are a couple links to droid action figure lists:
http://donsolo.wordpress.com/
http://www.rebelscum.com
Google Docs List
http://astromech.farbauti.de/ (added after initial post)

And now pics of my collection so far:

I found some bamboo desk dividers with ends that slide out at Big Lots a couple years ago. Droid figures fit in it perfectly. I'm intending to add a couple more "shelves" on the left side so it matches the right side. I also want to add some sort of plexiglass covering for convention display purposes. I have a third divider somewhere that I can add more figures (just have to find a place to hang it, not much room next to these guys).
I found Leia and R2 pack at the flea market for $7. I talked him down to $5 and now this pack is hard to find. I scored big time and didn't even know it!! So, here's what I did tonight while watching LOTR/Two Towers for the umpteenth time.

First I got out my muslin. People ask me what kind of muslin I use, and it's a doozy. I have hundreds of padded packing paper from seven years ago when my parents passed on. I just rip the brown paper off and I get lots of blue thin fabric that works quite well. Ask your local moving companies/uhaul/PODS/etc for some padded paper. It'll cost you some, but it's cheaper than what you can get at a fabric store. Or use any old sheets/curtains/etc. Remember, it's going to be tossed out eventually.

Now on to the fun stuff.

This is based on a regular IO front panel. You'll need to adjust and measure this piece on your body using CharToraz's tutorial. You'll also need to take the right side of the neck line and make a straight edge from center to about one inch below your right shoulder. In this pic I labeled the panels backwards but the end results are the same. R will actually go over your left shoulder and L will go just under your right shoulder seam.

From the point where the neck curve becomes straight draw a straight line to the bottom edge somewhat parallel to the right edge. Cut on this line to make R. Measure two to three inches from the left edge at both top and bottom. What ever measurement you decide to use it must be the same at top and bottom. Draw a straight line and cut to make L. The middle piece is automatically magic!

These three pieces will be the basis for your pattern pieces. Take another large piece of muslin and pin R and Mid on it. Cut at least one inch on the sides you cut in the previous step. This will give you seam allowance and some extra to adjust for that taylored look (it's always better to cut bigger than smaller!).

For L fold your muslin giving yourself at least one inch extra on the short side. Lay the long side of L on the fold and cut on the extra inch for seam allowance and adjustments.

As a long-time quilter I like to use a straight edge and rotary cutter. If you don't have those please try to cut as straight as possible. Tip: you can use any ruler or straight edge like a piece of paper and cut outside the edge. This will help you get a nice clean cut.

At this time you'll have three larger pieces that looks something like this. L is unfolded in this pic. Sew R to Mid, then the unfolded L to Mid.

This is what it will look like after sewing the three pieces together.

This is a close up of the top neck line. Notice the pointed shape of the unfolded L.

This is what you'll get when you fold L under. L will get some light batting and then whipstitched into place on the back. I'll have pics of that process later (when I get to that part).

Again, I had you all cut the pieces a little big for any adjustments. I already had to adjust the Mid section a little for the L seam (my Mid was a smidgeon too large). You'll probably be trimming off a little here and there when you get it fitted on the rest of the tunic.

Until next time,
They have a size 7 which will work (my shoe size is 6.5 ladies). Granted they are replicas but they're the right ones with a top buckle and gusset. A friend of mine got the real thing for much cheaper, so I'm going to see what his looks like and if they have small sizes ($45 for real ones versus $90 for replicas from England).
It seems you can no longer wear an IO with a helmet and belt boxes and call it a day (which is what I did). I'm going for the new Level 3 (L3) super accurate costume. I've already ordered my metal belt boxes (no plastic for L3), found a source on ebay.uk for the correct boots with straps/gussets, and sent an email to the only person I know making gauntlets for small hands. As soon as I get all the details ironed out I'm going to post the whole tutorial on the Imperial Officers Corp (IOC) website. Unfortunately, AL will have to take a backseat again. Here's the first installment:

I found out that a few have made this tunic but no WIP's, pics, or instructions. The IOC CO has asked me to do a tunic tutorial for this particular one. I spent most of the day cleaning out my sewing room so I could find my IO tunic pattern pieces (found 'em). I'm going to start with that, adjusting the front panel, and tapering instead of skirting the bottom part. It looks like there will be a lot of similarities for building both IO and navy trooper, but I'll do my best to write this tutorial from start to finish. This is going to be fun.

First up is buying McCall's pattern #4745 Men's Civil War. It has the best collar and front panel.

We are going to basically use the one on the left with some major pattern adjustments (and definitely not that long, either). Also, if you can find ChazTorad (Chuck Folz) on the IOC for his IO tunic tutorial print that (I have a hard copy of it if anyone wants a copy). It's several files, ignore the dosimeter pocket instructions (no pockets on navy trooper). And don't bother with the skirt portion (we are going to flare it out as one piece for navy trooper). I'm still researching the sleeves as some say it's a standard fitted sleeve, not the IO two piece sleeve (under and over sleeve). If this is true a standard fitted straight sleeve pattern without cuffs will do. Also, the back is one piece, no princess seams or side cut-ins. I'll get pics up as soon as I cut my correct pattern pieces so everyone can see what I'm talking about (most of this info is for experienced costumers).

I also got some black twill on sale at Joann Fabrics ($6.99 a yard with 20% coupon). I bought the last 5.25 yards at my store and got half off for the last .25 yards as end of bolt sale (couldn't they give me half off for all of it since I practically took the whole bolt?). Get enough for pants and tunic so they can be from the same cut of fabric.

Use any plain fitted straight pants pattern that you can find (Simplicity has several for beginners, I think mine is a very old McCall's). Don't use any old black pants that you find in the store as the chances of it matching the tunic are nil. No Jodphurs for this one! I might put a pocket in them so I can carry keys and wallet (although I think converting one of the belt boxes for that would be awesome). Tomorrow I'll be cutting out my pants pieces and putting that together (now that I have the fabric). I won't be giving detailed instructions on the pants, just follow the pattern instructions. When you're finished iron to crease down the front of the legs. There's been progress after a week of sniffing glue and paint. LOL Anyway, here is what I've done this week (two more days to finish, I can do it!)
all while learning how to use Bondo! I'm soooo proud of myself, I actually learned some prop-making tips from Cal and the gang. Not bad for my first time. Now I have to sand the Bondo to a smooth finish before priming and painting the legs.

While the Bondo and paint were drying, I attached the shelves together using 1/2" aluminum spacers and 1 1/4" 10-32 flat head screws. Didn't need to countersink as the screws fit in tightly and flat. Then I gave the whole top a slight spray of paint to cover the screws and hide any imperfections. Don't need much paint, just a nice back-and-forth spray from about a foot away.

After letting the tray dry overnight, I'm gluing on the tray greeblies this morning.

I still have to sand and paint the legs, attach leg greeblies, and attach the tray to the legs. Gotta be done by Tuesday night so I can pack the darn thing Wednesday morning. I should be done in plenty of time since the hard part (all the painting except the legs) are done. Thinking of doing some custion plastic boxes for the trays so I can display some of my droid action figures. Or just put on my dad's ceramic collector Schlitz mugs! Oh baby....

It's been a long time since I've made any progress on AL, but decided to finish his drink tray for Galaxyfest in February. It started with a big box of plastic PVC parts that I had to sort through and seperate. I'm using Alex King's and Jerry Green's blog WIP's to put this thing together.

Glue I'm using for PVC, a little goes a long way. Don't get it on your fingers (I speak from experience):

Lay out the squarish drink parts and label them from left to right (I used 1UP, 2D, 3UP, 4D, etc). There will be two layers you'll have to glue together. Make sure to line up the holes and edges before gluing. You'll have seven of these when done.

I tested some primer and paint on the back of one of them. I figured since it will be hidden from view it didn't matter. There just isn't much scrap in the box to test on. Mark the back side in fourths and try a few primers, let dry, and try some paints.

Here are the paints I settled on. A very white Rust-oleum plastic primer, Rust-oleum hammered brown (didn't quite get the texture on the plastic, but I adore the color), and Krylon metallics gold (shiny!). I really didn't like the copper or other browns/golds I tried. Pick what you like, though.

Next, you'll have another squarish part with frilly doohickies on it. The whole part looks like this, unfortunately I took it apart and painted it before taking these pics. DO NOT take off the tape from the back yet (you might have to peel a little away from the ring to seperate it, though).

Seperate the outer "ring", prime and paint that ring with your chosen color, prime and paint the frilly section. Make sure you paint the inside edges of the ring before gluing it to the main section.

Now you can take the tape off. The circles and "stuff" will fall away easily along with the outer frilly edge.

Completed frilly section. You'll have to prime and paint the edges before gluing into place.

Lay the outer ring onto your main section that you've already glued together. Glue that down. Don't glue the frilly section down yet, I'm just showing you what it will look like when done.

At this point you'll have three layers (without the frilly section). Sand, prime, and paint the edges (I would suggest the same as your main section, but you can be creative). I haven't done this step yet (still waiting for inner edges of rings to dry). This pic is just to show you what it looks like.

So, what do you do with all the frilly section "stuff"? I've put it all in a bowl and will get creative later. I've been reading Foundation again, and thought the big circles would be the great beginnings of a Spaceship-and-Sun badge.

I'll post later the next steps, which is basically gluing down the frilly sections and bolting them all together. Legs will come later. Tip: Don't glue ontop of the holes, you might have to fudge a little.

Until next time,
They were taken by various attendees of the very first Denver Comic Con. 20,000+ congoers showed up at the convention center last weekend to see their favorite comic book artists, celebrities, movie cars, costumes, and of course, droids. Now, I've gotta tell you I never buy any art work at these scifi conventions, but the quality was so good I had to buy a couple pieces of artwork, including a comic art piece with the Peanuts gang in a SW setting (imagine Snoopy as Vader!). And it's companion piece, the gang in LOTR (Snoopy as Gandalf!). You get the idea. I'll try to find pics of them.
This website was posted on the astromech forums, www.thecustomsabershop.com, and I decided to give the saber build tool a try. Here's what I came up with. Of course, they want you to buy all the parts, but it's not a bad deal. Probably will cost me about $75 to $100 for a custom saber. I'll definitely paint it myself, however the powder coating option looks good to me!

And now for some AL updates:
I'm hooking up two 12v batteries in parallel to give his foot motors some more boost. I'm also fixing/redoing the foot locks. A couple local friends gave me some scrap aluminum to fix the center vent skins (I might do that today, along with the foot locks). I've also started some soldering, but it's really messy, might have to hire someone to solder in his lights for me. In the meantime, he's been on the news! Take a look at Dan Daru's morning show on Fox:

http://kdvr.com/2012/04/20/dans-day-at-starfest/

AL's in all three, but the one where he rolls towards the camera was not posted. Oh well, maybe next year.

AL's planned events:
Jun 15-17, 2012 Denver Comic Con
Aug 17-Sep2, 2012 SW Celebration 6 (CVI)
Oct 28, 2012 Hauntings at the Hangar
Nov 2-4, 2012 Nebraskon
Feb 8-10, 2013 Galaxyfest
April 19-21, 2013 Starfest
And any other holiday, local 501st events, etc that he's invited. The above list uses up my 20 days of vacation, so any other events will have to be on a Friday or Saturday locally.

And speaking of a local event: June 30th (a Saturday) at my place will be a droid/armor build day. If you are reading this and want to come, email me for details and directions.

Until next time,
Colorado is honored to have one of the more unusual and mobile groups in the nation: the Colorado Movie Car Club! This group certainly gets around, going to events throughout the country. They draw a crowd everywhere they go. As their name group says, these are the guys (and gals) that hunt down cars and transform them into movie car replicas. Think General Lee, KITT, Ecto mobile from Ghostbusters, Umbrella Corp car, the emergency vehicles from Emergency!, even a Scooby Doo van. Unfortunately the Love Bug couldn't make it, but the Starsky and Hutch car and the Jurrasic Jeep were there! Here's a few pics of their gorgeous cars, and look them up on FB (they have a short video of the pre-parade).

They had about a dozen cars there, and all were big hits with the crowd. Personally I've been hunting down a '69 Barricuda hatchback (the car I learned to drive) and converting it to a Mad Max type of vehicle, or a yellow Cuda to make Nash Bridges' car. Either way, someday I will get a Cuda and make it into something so I can join this group. Or as a member of the Umbrella Corp, maybe I can just hang with that gorgeous black Umbrella SUV!! (hmmm, I might have to make another Umbrella car).

After the parade everyone was so tired that we just hopped onto the float or into the truck so Jen could drive us back to the lightrail station. Took an hour just to get out of the parking lot at the end of the parade (vehicles in parade only!). And once out of the parking lot, everyone was directed to get on the freeway, whether you wanted on or not! Imagine a long line of trucks and cars pulling trailers trying to get on the freeway and get off just as quickly. I thought the whole traffic situation was total bull!!! Another long trek on the trains, and finally I was home by 4:00pm. Usually we hit the Tilted Kilt (the TK) after the parade then go home, but no one went out afterwards. After eight hours in costume, riding trains, walking to staging areas, standing around for three hours, an hour and a half to get through the parade itself, getting back to the station, riding trains back home, I tore off my costume and crashed on the couch for an hour before working on AL again. Can you say "exhaustion"???? Not sure if I can do this again next year...

Part 4 is the second event of the weekend, the Rialto Theater screening of ROTJ!! Longer day but much more fun!! Look for that blog within a day or two...

Until next time,
And now the parade!! Meg and I were the banner carriers. We followed the Spring Bear Pow Wow native american dancers. Half way through I had a headache from all the drum beating, but was amazed at how the kids were able to dance the entire two mile route!! I was told to look serious, but couldn't help laughing the whole way. You could hear the roar from the crowd as we approached, many of them running up to us for photo ops! I'll just give you a few of Bill's pics to look at:

Our garrison attitude has been and will always be a "Can Do" one. Our newest member, Todd, proved that right, as he marched through the entire route in his wheelchair. Way too tired with a splitting pressure headache! I spent all day Friday putting in AL's foot wedges (blogging on that later with pics), packing up stuff, and checking the lightrail schedule. Saturday was the big event, St. Patty's Day Parade! Sunday was a special screening of the Return of the Jedi at the Rialto Theater in Loveland, CO. Monday night was a book signing at the Tattered Cover with my good friend and SW author Christie Golden. Sorry to say I missed the Monday night event.

Denver has the second largest St. Pat's Parade in the country, and this year was the 50th anniversary of the parade. With all the construction going on downtown, twice as many revelers in the downtown area, twice as many floats in the parade, and no parking downtown, the logistics this year was horrendous! My day started at 6:00am to feed the cats and put on my Imperial Officer uniform. I had to make sure everything I needed could fit in one pocket (including my inhaler). Drove to the Nine Mile station, jumped on the H-line, and headed for the Broadway station where everyone in the MG was meeting. The RTD security officer took one look at me and asked if I had any weapons! I had to explain to him what my costume was so he could calm down a very fussy mother and her little boy (she thought I was a terrorist). Got to Broadway OK, met with the gang, everyone suited up, then we had a mob scene as we took a group photo on the ramp.
Since there were so many entries this year in the parade we sat around, taking the occasional group photo, for three hours in the hot sun before we stepped off down the route. Here's some pre-parade photos:

It was a blast, and if they do it again next year AL and I will be back for sure! AL had his own table in the back of the dealers room for security reasons (OK, he shared it with Sauron). The table next to me was RL/RMFF! What fun we had, all of us in the back of the bus! (reference to Riddick) The 501st was out front with one officer at that table, another officer wandering the halls, and me in my officer in the dealers room. Yep, we Imperial officers had all bases covered and secured! LOL

Another hobby of mine (can anyone have too many hobbies?) is anything Resident Evil. You must know that I'm not a gamer by any means, but I do love to look at game scenes and the movies are fabulous if you're into bloodie zombies and groups of people running for their lives (which I am into those things). This past summer I went to the Army surplus store and plopped a couple hundred bucks for everything I need for an Umbrella Corp soldier. Of course, I spent a couple months researching this uniform and decided to go with the game one, complete with gas mask and all! At Galaxyfest I decided to wear it Saturday afternoon and ran into a Racoon City "cop". We both made our way to the FantaScenes photography booth and had this pic done for us. My friend Don Searle, the photog, even had it "comicized" for us (like my made-up word for the day?).

I'll post some more pics this weekend. A few friends already posted pics of AL all over the internet. I've got some work to do on him before March 18th, his next event at the Rialto Theater in Loveland, CO for the E3 screening. Then it's Starfest time third weekend of April at the DTC Marriott. I've already joined the local Umbrella Corp group. Hmmm, need to get AL a gas mask?

Until next time,
With the EP1 3D premiere happening this weekend, I've been really busy trying to get Sauron finished (he has one event on Friday Feb 10th and two on Saturday Feb 11th). I'm also busy working on a Naboo Officer uniform to go with him. Here are some progress pics:

The hardest part was the radar. Here you see an old cookie press I picked up at a garage sale some years ago for a buck. Took me several months to figure out what I can use this for after cannibalizing it.

This was taken apart before I took the pic, so just imagine this. At the bottom of the plunger is a disk that pushes out the cookie dough (I tried to take a pic of what it kinda looked like before I took the disk off).

Now you can see the results. I drilled a bigger hole in the middle, put a plug through it (bolted on back), and it really looks like the scrubber radar! And to think an old cookie press was sitting in a drawer with no use for years!!!

Next came what we call "deer warnings" that came with old cars. Mine is just a cut-up wooden dowel painted metallic silver and super-glued onto the "risers" that came with the scrubber.

I've been working on this little box for a couple weeks now (also came with scrubber). It's nothing more than a small plastic tackle/craft box with a piece of a circuit board cut to shape, painted yellow, and super-glued on the left. Some black wooden slat pieces glued at the top of the circuit board. I have the doodads for the right side, just got to glue them in place. Shouldn't take more than an hour to finish.

Sauron's one eye, thus the name. I was tempted to paint it red inside, but it's all glued together now. If you're lucky enough to end up at a hospital like I was, you'll end up with a very extra large car cup. Silver ring is the lid to that cup, tab cut off, painted metallic silver, screwed onto body with flathead screw through straw hole. Cut out some old circuit boards to fit (or one large round one if you like), screw those into place using any holes in the boards themselves (I even super-glued it on first then screwed it in). Top it all off with half a plastic christmas ornament glued onto the inner rim of the lid. Simple and free (if you don't count the hospital bill! LOL).

Speaking of circuit boards, found this old DIM memory board. Screwed that on the side for good measure. Just wanted something that looked neat on the side.

This takes some imagination. This is a heavy black plastic flower pot I found at Goodwill last week. It had a very large rim on it that I cut off. The top of the scrubber has an added funny half-circle shape that has a cutout on the front end and tubes sticking out the back end. It's done in two to three parts, with a Korky toilet scrubber holder cut to shape in the front and whatever you can find for the back. The Korky part fits over the top end of this pot beautifully, and the tubes will be attached on the bottom (very hard plastic, so it should hold wonderfully). I've already bolted on the Korky part and painted the whole think yellow. The entire length is 11.25". Officially it's suppose to be 11". 1/4" longer for a found object that cost me $3, not bad!!!!

In this pic you'll notice that I repainted the whole thing a brighter yellow, cleaned up the black stripes, and started attaching things to it. Since this pic I've added the silver tape to the corners, handmade a mounting attachment for the radar out of scrap aluminum (sturdy but kinda springy), and finished up the top portion (gotta bolt it on).

And you won't believe the drive system!!! If I ever decide to make a true robotic drive system at least I'll have an awesome Hummer to play with!!! LOL

Yep, Sauron has his very own mounting rack ontop of the truck. Nothing but the best for my Sauron! He drives in style! How come my droids get cool toys to drive and I'm stuck with an old Subaru??

That's all for now. I'll get final pics up as soon as I can. If anyone wants to see him in person, I'll be at AMC Westminster Promenade Feb 10th 6:00pm, AMC Highlands Ranch Feb 11th 11:00am, and Harkins Theater Feb 11th 6:00pm. Now to get the Naboo Officer finished. Sorry, no time to document that build.

I know, I'm not making much since today. Technology, ya gotta love it!!
In the meantime, I'm cutting some metal plates for his center foot casters so he can roll again. The wooden block I made cracked in half during Hauntings at the Hangar. His schedule this holiday season:
Friday 9th - Star Wars Bluray screening
Saturday 10th - Golden Christmas Parade (if he fits in the cart and if it's not snowing)
Saturday 10th - Open Cockpit Wings Over the Rockies (after parade or if it's snowing)
Friday 16th - can't remember but there definitely is something going on
Saturday 17th - Foothills Fashion Mall Toys-for-Tots in Ft. Collins
If you haven't met AL this is a great opportunity to see him in his Santa hat!

Jaka has a departmental luncheon, a company christmas party, and hosting the Christmas Eve Apres-ski party up in Breckenridge ski resort. I'll be in Breckenridge Dec 23-26, AL and the cats are staying home and having their own little party!
Jawa Jakahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13109523023548189071noreply@blogger.com0
